Biocatalysis; allosteric enzymes; supramolecular biochemistry.


The biocatalysis project points to the use of enzymes in non-conventional media for the production of pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. One of our models is the lipase from Bacillus pumilus GMA1. We are also analyzing the catalytic properties of nitrile degrading enzymes in collaboration with Dr. Georgina Garza-Ramos.


Our experimental model of allosteric enzyme is glucosamine-6-phosphate deaminase from Escherichia coli. This is a homohexameric protein, which is activated by N-acetyl-glucosamine-6-phosphate. The allosteric transition of this enzyme has been studied in collaboration with Prof. Mario L. Calcagno. Our results indicate that the quaternary change occurs through a complex network of interactions.


The supramolecular biochemistry model is the association and dissociation of viral capsids of Parvovirs B19 (B19V), Brome Mosaic Virus (BMV) and encapsulin  nanocompartments of Myxococcus xanthus. The main goal in this research is to design new approaches to deal with these pathogen agents and to develop nanomaterials for use in medicine.
